Mandy Haggith

Want to write?

I believe everyone can be a writer. We all use language and have a unique view on the world. I'm always willing to help people to strengthen their own creative writing, through mentoring or workshops. You can buy a one-to-one session with me below or contact me to enquire about  a workshop.

I am an experienced creative writing tutor, teaching writing in many different formats and to a wide range of groups, from one-off primary school walks writing 'poetree' out in the woods, to courses of evening classes for large and small groups of adults with serious aspirations for historical fiction. I have a Creative Writing masters degree with distinction from Glasgow University, where I studied from 2003 to 2005. I teach literature and creative writing at the University of Highlands and Islands, at all levels from basic communications to post graduate.

Mentoring

As well as creative writing classes, I relish one-to-one teaching opportunities. Students or people who want a writing mentor send me writing work, from time to time, as and when they need feedback or encouragement. If you would like to establish such a relationship with me, feel free to contact me by email or phone - my contact details are here.

My usual approach is to invite you to send me something to read - normally up to 10 poems, or 5000 words of prose. I will provide feedback either by email, phone, video call or if feasible in person - whichever you prefer. I'm also happy to give feedback on longer pieces, but if so, I'll need to charge you a bit more. You can pay with the paypal buttons below, post a cheque or pay direct to my bank (details on request).

Testimonials

Here are some of the nice things that students and retreat participants have said about my teaching.

'There is earth, wind, fire and water. And then there is Mandy Haggith. She is the fifth force of nature. And nurture... ' Ladawn Clare-Panton.

'...One thing that never failed was her ability to ignite your sense of wonder, heighten every sense in your body like when you were a child doing and seeing everything for the very first time. She took me to places I never knew existed inside and outside of myself.'

'When she speaks with you she is so thoughtful and considerate. You never get the feeling she wants to interrupt you. Or hurry you along. She just absorbs you and ignites your passion in writing, in poetry, in nature, in people...'

'...the real magic happened in the way Mandy chatted to each and every one of us about our lives and our relationship to writing. She was interested in each and everyone of us in our own, her own special way. When she listened to you, she gave you every ounce of her attention. When she gave you advice it was constructive and supportive and imminently relevant and useful.'
