Research
I've been doing research since my early twenties. Originally my field was artificial intelligence (back when that was a new-fangled thing) and my PhD explored how a computer might handle multiple, conflicting points of view. I worked as a freelance researcher for many years, developing computer tools and models with environmental scientists, land managers, anthropologists and communities.
These days my research involves using poetry and other creative methods to explore environmental issues, especially woods, the sea and climate change and I collaborate with many artists, scientists and communities. I'm an honorary research fellow at the Scottish Association for Marine Science and a member of academic staff at the University of the Highlands and Islands . Over recent years I have led several projects, some of which have been hosted at UHI and some of which I have done in an independent capacity. This page provides links to some of these projects and relevant other websites and publications.
